Join the John McGahern Trail, Visit the home place of this famous author and see where his mother taught and the churchyard where he is buried.There is a library in Lough Rynn dedicated to him.



Keshcarrigan has connections with Fr. Mychel Judge the francisan friar who was the first named casualty of 911. There is a peace garden erected in his honour by the lakeside.



Carrick-on-Shannon:

The capital town of Leitrim on the river Shannon. Watch the boats sail by, visit the many shops, pubs and restaurants.Visit 'The Dock' for exhibitions of local and national artists and artistes.



Ballinamore:

The next largest town on Erne Waterway- good pubs and restaurants and the genealogy centre is just across from the catholic church.



Mohill:

A busy town especially for the farming community where the local mart is weekly fixture.



Dromod:

A tidy town with beautiful flowers, good eateries, pubs and good access to the Shannon for boats.




Genealogy:

The Leitrim Genealogy Centre offers a Full Service to enquirers and has access to church, civil, land and census returns for that county. The centre is one of the longest established Irish Family History Foundation Centres.

The main records include:

  • Roman Catholic records, the earliest of which date from 1823
  • Church of Ireland records date from 1783
  • The earliest surviving Presbyterian records date from 1829

Records, up to 1900, have been computerised at the Leitrim Genealogy Centre.

The Leitrim Genealogy Centre also holds copies of:

  • The 1901 census
  • Newspaper indexes
  • Civil records
  • Gravestone inscriptions
